Science verses Religion and Democracy

From the 19th Century Scientists have been calling for the abolition of Religion and Democracy to replace it all with a Dictatorship of top Scientists like Plato's Philosopher Kings. They have argued that "Now Scientists know everything, Religion should be replaced by Science and Scientists should make all the decisions about running the country". This demand is constantly repeated and has recently surfaced in the Intelligent Design Debate, with the call to make Scientific doctrine enforceable by Law.
The Ant Specialist E.O.Wilson the inventor of "Sociobiology" in his 1978 Pulitzer Prize winning book "On Human Nature" argues that Science is a Religion, but one that is superior to any other and has answered all the questions God put to Job and then some, so Scientists should be accepted as a replacement for God and rule over us as a quasi Scientific Theocracy.
Wilson is a Gay activist and devotes a large part to arguing that Gay is the next step in Evolution and since Gays are superior to normal humans should be privileged and encouraged.
So there you have the nub of "The War between Science and Religion". It has always been about homosexuality as it is today.
If Science wins we will be living on a Gay Planet
and reproduction will be in bottles as described in Aldous Huxley's famous book "The Brave New World"
Huxley was a prophet. He saw this plan and opposed it. He tried to warn us, but we failed to take him seriously.
The Brave New World is now ominously close, so are we soon to see Huxley's books along with the Bible and all the other homophobic books burned in a giant bonfire to celebrate total Gay victory?

What? You being able to chew gum and walk at the same time? No great accomplishment, I assure you.

This coming from someone who constantly insults gays.

I call you an idiot based on your posts on this messageboard. I'm calling it like I see it. You may or may not be like that in real life. You may only be posting this bigoted crap to get a rise out of people. But your posts lead me to believe you are an idiot who doesn't know what they're talking about.

I don't speak for all atheists, only myself. And I couldn't care less about being popular.

Actually, it's more like 'Science and Democracy verses Religeon. Throughout history, religeon has been responsible for inhibiting both freedom and scientific progression. Just remember, democracy started with the early philosophers of Ancient Greece, who were mostly atheist. And, the ones that weren't were freeform pagan, with little or no dogma.

So very well informed. It was the Philosophers like Socrates and Plato who opposed Democracy and prefered Fasism - the anti-democratic rule of the Philosopher Kings. The Gays still rail about "the tyrany of Democracy"

From Plato's The Republic Book VII
Quote:
Well, I said, and you would agree (would you not?) that what has been said about the State and the government is not a mere dream, and although difficult not impossible, but only possible in the way which has been supposed; that is to say, when the true philosopher kings are born in a State, one or more of them, despising the honours of this present world which they deem mean and worthless, esteeming above all things right and the honour that springs from right, and regarding justice as the greatest and most necessary of all things, whose ministers they are, and whose principles will be exalted by them when they set in order their own city?

How will they proceed?

They will begin by sending out into the country all the inhabitants of the city who are more than ten years old, and will take possession of their children, who will be unaffected by the habits of their parents; these they will train in their own habits and laws, I mean in the laws which we have given them: and in this way the State and constitution of which we were speaking will soonest and most easily attain happiness, and the nation which has such a constitution will gain most.

Yes, that will be the best way. And I think, Socrates, that you have very well described how, if ever, such a constitution might come into being.

Enough then of the perfect State, and of the man who bears its image — there is no difficulty in seeing how we shall describe him.

There is no difficulty, he replied; and I agree with you in thinking that nothing more need be said.

Okay, so a few Greek philosophers may have argued against democracy, It doesn't change the fact that others also invented it. There were more Greeks than Socrates and Plato. Besides, democracy isn't the holy grail that some take it to be. Remember, Hitler was elected, as was Stalin (And, I think, Pol Pot?)

Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot were never elected. It is a common misperception that Hitler was popularly elected though.

Hitler was elected. The fact that the election was unfair, as many politicians were threatened into voting for him only highlights the failings of the democratic system. Stalin was elected general secretary of the Communist party in April, 1922. It has been suggested that this election was fraudulent, using fake votes, but this hasn't been proven. Even if it had it would, again, highlight how easy it is to manipulate the democratic system.

But let’s get back to the main point of my argument, namely that organised religion can hardly be allied with democracy. For centuries the Catholic Church supported and exploited the feudal system. There was no notion of free speech, any who disagreed with the church were charged with heresy. Then the puritan movement created a new government in Britain, consisting of unelected lords. More recently, we have Islamic terrorists bombing cities and rioting over cartoons. Evangelical Fundamentalists are teaching creationism as a serious alternative to Darwinian evolution. Jewish groups protest, accusing the Anglican Synod of anti-Semitism because they refuse to pay money to a company whose products are used to demolish people's homes. The political leaders of both Great Britain and the USA have claimed that their personal religion is a part of their political decisions. When is this going to end?
We must shake lose this insane notion that religion is somehow 'untouchable'. Free speech means that I can say whatever I like. If I want to draw pictures of Mohammed with a bomb in his head, or call the Christian god a rapist, or say someone (no names) is a total idiot for believing the universe was made in six 24-hour periods by a big father-figure in the sky, or that religion is naught but a crutch, comfort-blanket in times of stress, I can. And no-one can stop me. If you don't like it, no-one's forcing you to listen. And, if you want to use this as an excuse to teach creationism, etc. in schools, don't bother; children in schools have no choice but to listen to their teachers. And this is a big part of religion; hook 'em while they're young. That's the only way to avoid all those difficult questions the fundamentalists don't like, such as 'why?' or 'prove it'.

You are so right Lux. Everyone hates Democracy. But if you look to the Bible for a description of early Christianity it was very Democratic. Didn't last long did it? Didn't last long in early Greece, but its enemies are held up by our Education system as heroes. Why do people hate Democracy so much?
